The u-Locate Cable Transmitter cannot be used alone to locate utilities but is used with the Schonstedt u-Locate Cable And Pipe Locator (82 kHz), Schonstedt u-Locate Plus Cable And Pipe Locator (33 kHz and 82 kHz) or Schonstedt u-Locate Plus Cable Locator Receiver (all sold separately) to offer additional locating capabilities. The transmitter part is used to induce a signal onto a pipe or cable, and then the wand, or receiver, is used to locate the signal that the line is producing.
The Schonstedt transmitter can be used in Direct Connect mode, Inductive Clamp mode, and Signal Induction mode. In the Direct connect mode: the transmitter imposes a signal of the selected frequencies onto the pipe or cable to be traced. It does so by making direct contact with the pipe or cable at a point where the pipe/cable comes up to the surface of the ground. The circuit is closed by providing a return path with a stake that is buried in the ground near the transmitter.
Inductive clamp mode: In inductive clamp mode, the transmitter imposes a signal of the selected frequency onto the pipe or cable to be traced. It does so by energizing a clamp that is placed so that is it completely encircling the pipe or clamp at a point where the pipe/cable comes up to the surface of the ground. The clamp then induces a current onto the pipe or cable. In this mode, it is not necessary to provide a return path for the induced current to the transmitter.
Signal induction mode: the transmitter imposes a signal onto the pipe or cable to be traced. It does so by energizing an inductive antenna built into the case. The transmitter is placed on the ground in a direction perpendicular to the pipe or cable being traced. The inductive antenna then induces a current onto the pipe or cable. In this mode, it is not necessary to provide a return path for the induced current to the transmitter. The induced current will travel on the pipe or cable for a certain distance, making it possible to trace. The Schonstedt u-Locate Plus Cable Locator Transmitter has an accessory connection socket on the side and a convenient compartment inside to store the stake and leads.
